How can I overcome the loss of a loved one?

Losing a loved one is rarely easy. However, losing a loved one to a senseless accident that results from another person’s negligent behavior can be earth-shattering. While the grieving process is rarely easy, there are steps you can take to progress throughout it towards a place of healing. To this end, the American Psychological Association recommends the following tips.

Don’t deny your feelings

Every person’s grieving process is vastly different. Accordingly, you’re bound to experience a wide range of emotions as you move through it. Some people will feel anger about their loss while others may experience a profound sadness. Others still might experience confusion about how to move forward, especially if the death was sudden and unexpected. No matter what you feel, it’s important that you accept your emotions. Denying them will only prevent you from processing what occurred, which is crucial to healing from the pain.

Ask for help

In some instances, you may not be able to go it alone. If you feel as though you can’t take the hurt anymore it’s vital that you ask for help. If you have a strong social circle of friends and family reach out to them for support. Even having a shoulder to lean on will be extremely helpful if when suffering from a loss. If you don’t feel comfortable seeking solace in people you know, consider getting professional help. A psychologist will help you process your emotions as well as provide coping mechanisms for you going forward.

Celebrate the person you lost

You may also find solace in celebrating the person you lost. In this case, don’t focus on the loss but on the person’s life. Celebrate who they were and their accomplishments by sharing fond remembrances with others who knew them. You can do this by holding a wake in their honor or just speaking with those also affected by the person’s death. While these memories may be painful at first, they will help you keep the spirit of the person you once knew alive in your heart.
