Learning these pedestrian safety tips can protect you

Whether you are walking in a high-traffic area or through your neighborhood, walking in areas where there are motorists in California means that you are vulnerable to being hit, especially if you are not paying attention or if a driver does not notice you. At The Law Offices of Philip M. Toban, we have helped many victims of motor vehicle collisions throughout their recovery and efforts to get compensation for their injuries.

If you are hit by a car while you are walking, it is usually because of one of two reasons: first, you were distracted or your attention was diverted away from what is around you and you walked into the path of a vehicle or second, despite your efforts to pay attention to where you are going and traffic signals, a passing motorist was distracted and did not notice you and crashed into you. While you should always be vigilant in watching what is going on around you, it is also important to make eye contact with drivers before crossing a street so you can be confident that they see you and are going to stop.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some other things that you can do to protect yourself while you are walking near traffic include the following:

  • Dress in clothing that is noticeable. If you are walking in the dark, use reflective gear to stay visible.
  • If you are in an area without a sidewalk, walk with the flow of traffic and keep as much distance as you can between yourself and passing vehicles.
  • Never walk in busy areas if you have been drinking or are taking certain medications that could impair your ability to make responsible decisions.

When you know what to do to protect yourself and stay safe as a pedestrian, you can be more confident in your ability to get to where you are going safely. For more information, if you have been injured in an auto-pedestrian accident, visit our web page.
