What should I do after a hit and run?

Nothing is more frustrating to a driver than being involved in a hit and run accident. Taking the proper steps after an accident is crucial, especially if you’re injured or your vehicle has sustained damage. State Farm offers the following tips so you can achieve justice in the wake of a hit and run.

Stay at the scene

While you might want to go after the driver that caused the accident, doing so can be problematic for a few reasons. First, you may put yourself and others in danger if you’re driving recklessly, and these could lead to another accident that you would be liable for. You could also get in trouble with law enforcement for leaving the scene unless you’re on your way to get medical care. Remain where you are until law enforcement arrives so you can answer their questions.

If there are bystanders that witnessed the accident, make sure you speak with them. Witness testimony establishes an objective version of events and may also provide details on the fleeing driver. Be sure to take down all witness names and contact information. This information may be needed for the subsequent insurance claim or if you plan on taking the case to court.

Take down information

You should also jot down general information on what occurred. Take pictures of your car and the accident scene if you can. Also, make note of the other vehicle’s color, make and model, and as much of the plate number as you were privy to. Even partial information can prove useful when looking for a driver. Don't forget to write down when and where the accident occurred, and which direction the other vehicle traveled in.
